THE CARE AND FEEDING OF FLEETCHAT CHANNELS

A Maintenance Guide for Channel Owners & Users

Allyson M. W. Dyar
Chief Network Administrator, Fleetchat Network
Channel Administrator, Fleetchat Network

o0o

You're reading this document because you are interested in obtaining a channel on the Fleetchat network or currently own one. Channels or rooms, as some folks call it, are the specific areas on the Fleetchat network where like-minded folks congregate. See Fleetchat channels web page for examples.

Registering Your Nick

Before you can register a channel, make sure you have registered your nick (the name you want to use on Fleetchat). To register your nick, type:

/msg nickserv REGISTER YourNewPassWord YourEmailAddress

Once you've done, check your email and follow the directions.

For more information, type:

/nickserv help register

Note: All IRC commands are preceded by a forward slash: /

In order to be recognized as having a registered nick, you must identify with nickserv. You do that by typing:

/msg Nickserv identify YourNickPassword

Registering a Channel

Anyone can have a channel registered and you can do it by yourself!

  • Join the channel by typing:
    /JOIN #ChannelName
(note: make sure that you have an @ besides your name!)

  • Create the channel *:
/MSG CHANSERV REGISTER #channel ChannelPassWord Channel Description

    • #channel: name of channel to register
    • ChannelPassWord: password for your channel
    • Description: Short description of what your channel is about

  • Set the Topic Lock Off (otherwise, you can't change the topic:
/MSG CHANSERV SET #channel topiclock off

  • Set Yourself as the Founder of the Channel:
/MSG CHANSERV SET #channel FOUNDER ownernick

  • Add Ops to your channel (see below for more info) **
/msg ChanServ AOP #channel ADD nick

  • Once you've registered your channel, please  email (channels@fleetchat.org) the following information:
  • Your Nick (and the Owner's Nick if different)
  • Name of the Channel
  • Contact email address
  • URL (if you have one)
  • Do You Want this Information Listed on the Channels Page (yes/no)?

I'll use the information to update the channels page on the Fleetchat website (if you don't want your channel listed, please let me know but still send the requested information). Please make it a point to send any changes as needed although I usually put a general call for updates/changes, etc., twice a year.

* I'm going request that all channel names be kept reasonable by avoiding any offensive names. You run the risk of me not only deleting your channel but banning you off of the server. Trust me, you don't want to annoy me!

** If for some reason, you still aren't being op'd in channel, please make sure you've run the identify command, but if that still doesn't work, use:

/msg ChanServ OP #ChannelToBeOp'dIn YourFleetchatNick

You'll need to use this command each time you enter a channel you should be an op in.

Basic Channel Maintenance

Once your channel is registered, here are a few things you need to know.

  • In order to be recognized as an operator (op; with an @ besides your nick), you must identify with nickserv. You do that by typing:

    /MSG Nickserv identify YourNickPassword

  • Some IRC clients allow you to automate this process. For instance, in mIRC, you can put this command under "perform" so it is run each time you log onto Fleetchat.

In order to keep your channel registered, channel owners must access their channel at least once every 14 (fourteen) days and you must be op'd in your channel. So make sure you run the nickserv identify (see above) each time you come on Fleetchat, otherwise, you risk your channel becoming unregistered. (See also "Adding a Successor" below.)

  • Other helpful nickserv maintenance commands can be access by typing:

    /msg nickserv help

  • Adding other Channel Operators (Ops)
  • The command is:

/MSG CHANSERV AOP #ChannelName ADD NickToBeAdded

#ChannelName: This is the name of your channel (don't forget the #) and you must be logged into the channel in order for this to work.

NickToBeAdded: This is the nick of the person you want added as a channel operator (note: the nick must be registered; see above)

  • Adding a Successor

From /msg chanserv help set successor:

If the founder's nickname expires or is dropped while the channel is still registered, the successor will become the new founder of ChanServ- the channel. However, if the successor already has too many channels registered (20) the channel will be dropped instead, just as if no successor had been set. The nickname must be a registered one.

This is a good way for the channel not to expire if the owner is unable to access fleetchat for some reason (like being on holiday). Adding a successor is easy. The command is:

/MSG CHANSERV SET #ChannelName SUCCESSOR NickToBeAdded

There are a number of other set commands you can use to set the channel email and URL, entry message, password, etc. This is very useful for channel maintenance.

  • Other helpful channel maintenance commands can be access by typing:

    /msg chanserv help

  • More information about channel commands is available at Anope 1.7.20.1324. Use with Caution. If you don't know what you're doing, by all means, don't do it or come into #fleetchat and ask!

  • Fleetbot

Our official bot here on Fleetchat is Fleetbot (who even owns his own channel, #trivia). Any channel owner may request that Fleetbot become a permanent member of the channel. Email any requests to:

    Greg Trotter: tech@fleetchat.org

For those channels who have Fleetbot resident, here are instructions on how to set an intro line (a line that is sent to the channel announcing you when you come in). First you need to introduce yourself to the bot. This command will help you set up an account with a password.

    /MSG FleetBot HELLO

Use the following command to set your channel info (introduction):

/MSG FleetBot INFO YourFleetbotPassWord #ChannelName YourIntroLine

Once you've set your Intro/Info Line, you need to leave the channel for at least five minutes. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't work the first time out.

For a list of Fleetbot commands:

    /MSG FleetBot HELP

If you still have any questions, come into #fleetchat and we'll be happy to help!

    Other Channel Bots

If you'd like to use your own bot in your channel, please contact Greg Trotter: tech@fleetchat.org before adding your bot.

    Any Fleetchat Rules or Regulations?

We Administrators of Fleetchat aren't going to enumerate a specific list of rules or regulations. We expect everyone who uses our services to act like adults. We ask that if an Op (the person with an @ or ! in front of his/her nick) requests you to cease an action, please do so immediately. Other more specific instances are outlined in our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).

    Internet School of Online Chat

Since IRC is mostly trial and error learning, this course is designed to help knock out some of the error. ISOC (Internet School of Online Chat) teaches you the main commands for nickserv and chanserv, which includes everything from registering with nickserv to keep your nickname from being stolen by someone else, to how to op yourself in a channel. Other useful commands are also included in the manual.

You must be a member of STARFLEET in order to take this course! For more information, link to:

Check out our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page. If that doesn't help, come onto Fleetchat and once you're logged on, join the channel fleet chat (/join #fleetchat) and we'll be happy to help! Don't worry if you think your question is too basic or too stupid. Once upon a time, we were all IRC newbies too!
